| The Carolina Panters will be at "A Day for the Dogs" May 17th doing a demo. You will have a chance to give your dog a run at flyball. Topher will also be competing in frisbee there! | ||
The Carolina Panters is an active Flyball team in the Queen City (Charlotte, NC). This is also the first flyball team. Karlei is the captain/owner of the flyball team and I am the co-captain. We are both really active around Charlotte's dog world and known throughout the state. We have put together a joint effort for this team and hope that we do great on our first tourney!
The Carolina Panters are now offering a beginner flyball class on Sundays at 5:30. This is your time to come out and see what you think of the sport and if you would like to get your dog into it. Or if you want to get into it and your dog doesn't, there are always rescues that are being fostered by flyball people that need a loving, forever home. Topher is an active member of the CPF team and being the youngest doesn't ever stop him! Topher grew up around the Panters, especially Swoop and Morgan, so he now thinks that he is a border collie. Crop the ears and grow a tail and who knows! We are hoping to get his first flyball title, FD (flyball dog), at the tournament in June. This will be held by the Blockade Runners Flyball team in Raleigh, NC.

| Tips and Tricks | ||

Topher loves flyball. We have been training him in it since he was 12 weeks old. Many people
have told me not to do anything, but anyone who has a Springer knows that you can't leave a
dog to do nothing and expect him to be happy.
We worked with him jumping over my leg, sitting on the floor with my legs stretched out and moved up and up. He is now 9 months old and jumping 8". He is supposed to be jumping 14". To start off: Play tug games, teach the word over, hold the dog and throw the ball and scream "Get it!" and give a lot of praise. Build some PVC jumps, and most important, COME TO PRACTICE! |
Tug: to create drive for something other than the ball itself.
Over: to make sure the dog will jump each time he sees a jump. This prevents them from going around the jump during practice. PVC: cheap, easy to use jumps. E-mail for instructions. | |
